Experiment Overview
Compare the ph level yeast grown in a weightless environment to ph yeast cells grown in a classroom lab.
Experiment Description & Goals
The student team expects to discover the effects of microgravity on microorganisms called Saccharomyces cerevisiae and to help scientists understand how cells respond to microgravity and increase the basic understanding of cell biology and uses. Yeast offers just about everything necessary for in an organism being tested in microgravity. Yeast experiments offer an easy and economical growth, a short generation time, hundreds of interesting mutants, and simple equipment requirements. Baker's Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) has become the highly studied single-cell eukaryotic organism. Yeast can easily be used to measure a wide range of independent variables.
Analysis
Measurement and data analysis will be recorded in the lab room using a digital scale, video camera, timer, data logger thermometer, and computer. Measurement and data analysis will be recorded on the sounding rocket via electronic video camera and data logger thermometer.
Analysis will be communicated by graphs, and pictures on a powerpoint presentation.
Data will be downloaded once the sounding rocket has landed. A USB cable will be connected to the electronic components to download the data to a computer. Flight data will then be compared to the lab data and an analysis and conclusion will be made.
